Remote video production due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Festival X was an annual celebration of creative work produced by School of Creative Industries students at UON. The festival would include displays, musical performances and in-person events over three days. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the 2021 was moved to an online-only event due to the uncertainty of being able to go ahead in person.

As such, a range of video content was required to be produced to provide context to the student work (artist statements), promote the festival (social media content) and other content such as a Festival Promo, Acknowledgement of Country and Director's Welcome video. Overall there were more than 20 separate videos produced for the festival in the 10 weeks leading up to the festival.

These videos included a large number of interviews with staff and students to discuss their work and creative process. Due to the lockdown, it was not possible to film these interviews in-person, so they were conducted over Zoom. Students/staff were provided some guidelines for best filming practices and captured their side of the interview on their phones/personal camera equipment and provided to us for post-production.

The festival branding was constructed by the students and utilised throughout the video content. The process was collaborative with Higher Ed Media working directly with Festival Coordinator (Christy Hay), Festival Director (Dr Stuart McBratney) and the Technical Team at The University of Newcastle to organise interviews with students and meet the brief of the project.
